PROJECT CO-FINANCING INSTITUTIONS
The EU's Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE) is the European Union's financial instrument devoted solely to funding projects in the fields (sub-programmes) of environment and climate. Its major purpose is to support implementation, development and updating of EU's legislation and policies related to environment protection and climate change, including identification and promotion of new approaches and soluions for a range of environmental - including biodiversity - challenges. Over the period of over 20 years of the Programme, over 4000 projects from all over Europe (incl. approx. 70 from Poland) have been co-financed. The current edition of the LIFE Programme covers the EU's 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, being a continuation of the previous edition (LIFE+) implemented in years 2007-2013. National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management, established in 1989, is the main "hub" of the national system of funding environmental protection and water management. The Fund's operations are an important tool supporting the implementation of the country's national environmental policies. The Fund offers loans, dotations and other means of co-financing of projects carried out by e.g. self-governments, business entities, public bodies, non-governmental organisations, or even single individuals. Within the public finance sector, the Fund is the Poland's largest partner of international financial institutions in management of foreign funds allocated for environmental protection. Since 2008, the Fund has been playing a role of the LIFE National Contact Point and supporting Polish LIFE applicants by offering a dedicated programme for national match funding for EU LIFE financing.
